Camping is THE activity on which the entire Scouting program is based. The obligation of the Troop Committee is to insure that a quality camping program including short and long-term camping is available. The suggested minimum is 12 nights of camping a year. Finding good campsites is a challenging chore for the PLC and the Troop Committee. Distance, cost, amenities, preparation needed are all competing factors in the selection of a campsite. While everyone has a favorite campsite, if a Troop or Patrol camps at one particular campsite too much, the Scouts will lose their enthusiasm for camping. Many troops will not camp in the same site more than once a year to keep it "fresh." Summer Camp is an important part of any Scout's developement. A scout is away from his parents for an extended period in which he must perform the basic skills to live and still earn awards and enjoy himself. At summer camp, the Scouts may earn merit badges or earn rank.
